Catching Up with RomHeadTech

A Palate Cleanser

It has been a thoroughly hectic several weeks, both music related and not music related. But we’re here to talk about the music!

I’ve been working with some collaborators that are very dear to me on a cover of the Tears for Fears classic “Shout”. It’s a banger of a song and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to record a cover in a style that I’ve been envisioning for over a decade. It’s out for mixing and mastering now (by the fantastic Travis Leeman - seriously, he’s amazing, go find out for yourself!). Keep your eyes peeled for a full “Stories Behind the Sounds” post on the “Shout” cover sometime in a few weeks. This one’s extra special.

However, as I’ve listened to the “Shout” cover about 8,251,915 times I needed a quick sliver of ginger for a palate cleanser; hence, the 15 second clip attached to this post. After working so hard on something that is about as far away as RomHeadTech as I can imagine, I hammered it out just to reset a bit. Also, ten bonus points for anyone who can tell me where the title “I Don’t Know Boy But It Ain’t Good” came from. I’ll give the first person (outside my household) to tell me the correct answer a download of the finished track when it’s done down the line.

Up next on the agenda:

  1. A short break from writing and recording - seriously, I’m exhausted! I’ll still get in some guitar practice during the break, just not writing any new material right now.

  2. Working on a track with EverDay

  3. Completing the in-progress collaboration with Jeremy Baker

  4. Completing “Deafening Silence”

  5. Providing parts for some other collaborations in progress, session musician type stuff

  6. More RomHeadTech stuff!

  7. And probably more EverDay stuff too!

I’m not going to call myself a singer by any means, but I’m finding my singing voice. Johnny Cash actually had a terrible singing voice, but his voice fit his material perfectly. So that’s my goal, have my voice fit my material. Initial feedback has been positive.

Looking ahead to 2026, I’ve got some ideas in mind that don’t involve cramming a cover song into a tight deadline. Those have been fun and they’ve been incredible learning experiences, but I need a break from covers and want to focus on some of my original works. I might provide some session collaboration on covers for other artists, but it’ll be awhile before I do a full cover of my own. And maybe, if things go well, you’ll have a chance to experience a full RomHeadTech album sometime in the not too distant future!

One other point of order: I have discontinued the Unappreciated Scholars Project. Got lots of feedback that it was a cool idea, but there were no takers. I’ll just write occasional posts about cool music that I find instead.

I think that’s it then? I don’t anticipate any more posts until January, so I’ll see y’all then.
